CAREER
AS BIOLOGICAL SCIENTIST
Biology
includes fields such as Agronomy. Animal Husbandry, Biochemistry,
Forestry, Horticulture, Fish and Wildlife Conservation and Range
Management. New and exciting careers have opened in Oceanography
and Marine Biology, High Altitude Biology and Environmental Biology.
We have also witnessed the growth of new professions during the
past few years- Bio-instrumentation, Biotechnology, Biophysics,
Cryobiology, Bionics, etc
Biological
scientists must have an above average aptitude in the understanding
of biological, chemical and mathematical concepts. Most of the
job is of observation and systematic study hence a systematic
approach coupled with patience and curiosity are essential to
sustain one through long periods of research and study. A good
approach to team work ensures success in projects where a number
of scientists are engaged.
Employment
Avenues
Genetic
research, new drug development, improved plant and agricultural
techniques spell success for the biological scientists. Ongoing
research in the field of medical sciences provides a further impetus
to the need for qualified biological scientists. Biologists with
advanced qualifications should find exciting opportunities in
specialities such as genetics, cellular biology, and biochemical
research. Since the job of most biological scientists is on long
term research projects the economic downturn does not generally
influence job opportunities. Many biological scientists work in
the research and development departments of industries concerned
with pharmaceuticals, foodstuffs, and chemicals. Graduate biological
scientists work as apprentices or technicians after receiving
hands on training.
Study/Training
For
careers in Biology, graduation and post graduation are available
in most universities after 10+2 in Zoology, Botany, Chemistry
or Geology. Further specialization at the post graduate level
and Ph.D can be done in the mentioned branches of Biology.
