COMPANY
SECRETARY EXAM
Company Secretaries are employed
by business houses and industrial concerns, both in
the public and the private sectors. To be eligible for
employment, one has to pass the examinations conducted
by the Department of Company Affairs, Ministry of Law,
Justice and Company Affairs, Shastri Bhavan, New Delhi
110001. There are three examinations:
(a) Preliminary
(b) Intermediate
(c) Final
Preliminary Examination:
The candidates appearing for Preliminary Examination
should at least be an Intermediate. However, candidates
who are Graduates, Chartered Accountants, Cost and Works
Accountants or holders of National Diploma in Commerce
are exempted from Preliminary Examination.
Examination Papers:
· English
· Book-keeping and Accountancy
· Elements of Commerce;
· Economics;
· Office Management.
Standard of Pass: A candidate for the Preliminary Examination
shall be declared pass in the examination, if he obtains
at one sitting a minimum of 40% marks in each paper
and 50% marks in the aggregate.
Intermediate Examination:
After passing the Preliminary Examination, or having
obtained exemption there from, the candidates, who are
not less than 18 years, are eligible to be registered
as students. After continued six months' registration,
the candidates may appear for the Intermediate Examination
of the Department.
The examination consists of Groups, each Group comprising
three subjects: Accountancy, Economics and Principles
of Law in Group I; and English, Secretarial Practice
(General) and Company Law in Group II.
Final Examination:
The registered students, one year after their passing
the Intermediate Examination, can appear in the Final
Examination. This examination also comprises two Groups-Group
I consisting of three subjects, namely, Advanced Accountancy
(including Company Taxation), Secretarial Practice (General),
Secretarial Practice (Administration and Management);
and Group II consisting of three subjects, namely; Mercantile
Law (including Elements of Labor, Legislation and Practice),
Economics and Company Law.
After passing the Final Examination, the candidates
have to complete at least six months' practical training
in Joint Stock Companies in secretarial work, insurance,
general administration, taxation and accounts. Only
after successful completion of practical training the
candidates are awarded the general diploma in company
secretary ship G.D.C.
The examinations are conducted twice a year by the Advisory
Board of Company Secretaries in April and October.

Service in Joint Stock Companies, Government departmental
undertakings, etc.
